Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (recognized as Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.) is federal holiday commemorating the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr in America. The holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Americans observe it on the third Monday of January each year (around King's birthday, January 15).

King was the leader for activism of nonviolence in the Civil Rights Movement, which successfully opposed racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday to honor King began soon after his death in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was observed for the first time three years later. In the beginning, some states did not want to observe the holiday as such, naming it alternatively or combining it with other holidays. Its officially observance has begun in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.
